Then we retreat to our rooms to pack and Chad makes the rounds to inspect our personal equipment our hiking boots and snow pants, our day packs and water bottles and our down and our fleece and our thinsulate.Īt lunch we sit and eat with Chad as he tells stories of his travels. We meet the local guide, Killian, and the head porter, James. Chad doles out down jackets and dry bags and extra batteries from plastic bins in the storage room that Mountain Guides International rents from Springland Hotel. We sit in the hotel garden and review what items to pack and whether we have brought batteries enough for water filters and headlamps. ![]() The Lonely Mountain.Ĭhad calls a meeting at ten AM of those who intend to climb the mountain with him. They test me by saying “shikamoo,” and smile when I answer “marhaba,” sharing in my pleasure at the lovely lilt of Swahili on the tongue. An enthusiastic hotel intern named Gospel brings me an omelette, and I greet the teenagers who staff the buffet. To climb the mountain named Kilimanjaro, I will need the calories I can find here. I spent last week puking up my guts in a tent in the Serengeti, and I can still feel the lingering weakness from this misadventure. John and Walt are still in high school.Ĭhad is talkative and outgoing, but I do not want to be diverted from eating. The last clients to arrive are John, with bright blue eyes and a shock of dark hair, and Walt, with close-cropped dark hair. A man named Edward and a woman named Allison sit with Chad already, and he gathers us to his table. Chad represents an American company named Mountain Guides International that specializes in training the leaders of wilderness expeditions as well as leading remote expeditions around the world. At eight I wake him again, for we both wish to have a long and leisurely breakfast.Īs we enter the patio which the hotel uses for its buffet meals, a bearded man introduces himself as our guide. He sleeps again as I rise and hang the clothesline and wash our woolen socks. I wake the gentleman in question as one ought to wake a man, sweetly, in the narrow cot beneath the mosquito net. I wake early, first to the croon of the muezzin and then to the persistent call of a dawn bird. “Gearing up for Kilimanjaro”: gear list.My heart feels good because I can forget the bad things and my heart feels better. ![]() I like singing because it makes me feel happy and it makes my day. Ī favourite Swahili song is Jambo, meaning Hello. Songs were shared, revealing how singing as a group gave the children a remarkable sense of joy, achievement, and self respect. In July 2 019, Kiki and Meka had the privilege of working with the choir together with their choir teachers, Willy and Billiance. The joy of singing carefully chosen songs makes a huge positive difference in their lives. The children in the choir have been abused, abandoned and lived in conditions beyond belief, which makes this C hoir even more remarkable. This amazing choir has brought joy to many by sharing their singing on Kenyan television, in church and in the ir own impoverished communities. This choir was founded by our Regional Director, Kiki McCormack. One Big Voice is proud to have Nakuru Hope Voices, located in Kenya, as our sister choir.
